Our Community

A child's growth is influenced by all the adults and environments encountered in day-to-day life; at Alta Vista we believe that teaching children effectively requires the close collaboration between home and school.

Our faculty and staff pursue a unified educational method dedicated to following the child through all the stages of physical, mental, and social growth.

All members of the child's family are encouraged to participate in the life of the school in a variety of ways including parent education, classroom activities, volunteer efforts, and community gatherings.

We offer a comprehensive parent education program, Making Connections, to bring home and school closer together.

Parents and often grandparents are encouraged to work together to support both daily work and special projects in the classrooms as well as to sponsor large events during the school year. Our organized parent group at Alta Vista is the Room Parents Group, which consists of volunteer parents from each classroom. We invite you to join the Room Parents Group in the beginning of each academic year.

Alumni make up part of our community, too. Many of them, on their own initiative, will walk into our school on a vacation day to say hello to their teachers and often join us for large events like the family picnic and art show. Alumni have returned to do volunteer work at Alta Vista and speak at the graduation ceremony. We warmly welcome them to our school community and appreciate their contributions!

Fostering Diversity

When Dr. Maria Montessori established her Casa dei Bambini more than 100 years ago, she created not only a classroom where children would receive an academic education, but also a social and emotional environment where children would receive and give respect to one another. At Alta Vista we appreciate the many different cultures that are represented within our school community. In our classrooms we celebrate that diversity with special celebrations organized by our parents. We want our children to understand that even though we may come from different backgrounds, ethnicity and cultures we all share a global human commonality.
